iCAN members are reminded to be on their guard against scam emails following an announcement from HM Revenue and Customs that around five million taxpayers will be affected by end of year tax adjustments.
Up to 3.5 million taxpayers who have overpaid tax will be in line for a rebate and up to 1.6 million will be asked to make up a shortfall in tax due to underpayment throughout the year. In most cases this will be collected automatically through the general tax code process.
Phishing emails purporting to come from HMRC have appeared in mail boxes up and the country in recent months and this kind of announcement unfortunately gives internet scammers a further window of opportunity.
Trading Standards would like to pass on some important information to iCAN members.
Colleagues in Social Services have brought to our attention that a letter is currently doing the rounds relating to Pyramid Selling.
The letter, received by one of our service users, is typical of a pyramid type scheme.
